THE PRESENT VALUE OF ETERNITY

“ He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” (Eccl.3:11 NIV)

Sunday school theology taught us to expect to live in eternity and for eternity when we die and that the lives we lead on the earth will determine the eternal divide we inherit. Whilst this theology focuses on a future reward, it’s very pertinent to expose the truth that God has set eternity in our hearts; which presupposes that eternity doesn’t only have future value but also present value.

I was taught in corporate finance that present value is the value of an expected income stream determined as of the date of valuation.  When you juxtapose and relate it to our eternal streams of reward, you’ll find that eternity with its streams of rewards and experiences begin when you receive Christ our Eternal Savior in your heart. Receiving and believing in Christ activates eternity in our hearts. Jesus speaking in John 17:3 said, “ And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”

Hear this: Eternity is here and there! Eternity has present value. Eternal life with its accompaniments starts here. (Prov.11:31; Luke 18:29-30)

What then is the current worth of eternity? The Kingdom of God which dwells in every believer in Christ is the sum of eternity. Therefore, according to Romans 14:17, the current worth or present value of eternity are these mutually inclusive and enhancing spiritual forces of all round progress.

1. Righteousness

We’ve received abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness. Righteousness of God that is imparted only when you are in Christ – that is eternity at work in present terms.

2. Peace

Prophet Isaiah said, “And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.” Eternity blesses our hearts and every aspect of our lives with peace – spiritual, financial, health, career, educational, marital and otherwise.

3. Joy in the Holy Ghost

The Holy Spirit is the Eternal Spirit of Joy. The greatest privilege ever, a believer in Christ has is to be indwelt by the Holy Spirit. When He dwells in you, your belly overflows with joy and life. And the Holy Spirit is Eternity Himself. What a joy!

Having established the present value and of course the net present value of eternity, I hereby recommend you buy into it today and now. Here are a few steps to buying into it.

• Receive and believe in Christ and His Word.

• As often as you can, re-enact eternity on the Communion Table.

• Be conscious of the eternal life that has been freely given to you by the Eternal Spirit of God.

• Exercise yourself unto godliness by walking with the Spirit of grace.
